Introduction to Studio Lighting & Studio Portraiture


Do you fancy yourself as a budding photographer, but you would like to know how to set up, shoot with and understand studio lighting? Learning about studio lighting is learning how to control light to create the image you have visualised.

Using a studio, photographic lights and a professional model, we will teach you the techniques that professional photographers use to get those glamour shots, dramatic shots and more. Though most people do not have access to a photographic studio, the skills and techniques taught in this course can be utilised in most photographic situations.

In this course we will cover:

  • Contrast ratios
  • Types of lights
  • Colour temperature
  • Diffusing light
  • Hard light versus soft light
  • Understanding light meters
  • Camera settings
  • Setting up your shot
  • Choosing the backdrop
  • Working with reflectors
  • Hi-key and low-key lighting
  • Working with a model

Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of photography is required. It is preferable that you bring your own DSLR camera to the workshop, however, it is not mandatory. This workshop assumes no prior knowledge of studio lighting.
